A sling bag uses a single strap that crosses one shoulder, designed to be swung around to the front of your body and back in one motion. That single-strap design is built for movement. It is the bag equivalent of a quick-draw holster, meant for someone who is walking, commuting, or moving through a crowd and needs access without stopping or taking the bag off. A crossbody bag typically uses a strap that sits more centrally across the chest and back, distributing weight more evenly and staying put rather than swinging into reach position. It is built to be worn, not repositioned.
That single difference changes everything else about how the bag performs.
Weight distribution is the first casualty of picking wrong.
A sling, because the strap crosses just one shoulder, puts more load on one side of the body. Fine for short trips to the store. So which one actually fits your day.

If your day is longer, heavier, and less about speed and more about comfort worn for hours at a time, a crossbody is the better bet. Most people do not need to choose only one. They need to stop buying whichever one is trending and start buying the one that matches Tuesday, not the vacation photo that sold them on it.
